this week I have mostly been watching

This film saw its two female leads nominated for Oscars, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. For those of you who don’t know (and by the way, was it nice under the rock?) Helen Keller became deaf and blind in early infancy following an illness. After spending much of her childhood in a state of unreachable rage, she ultimately reached a far, far higher level of attainment than was, at the time, believed possible for people like her. Annie Sullivan was the teacher who effected the change in Helen: a short-sighted woman herself, she’d spent a great deal of her own childhood virtually blind, never given any formal education because someone who could hardly see couldn’t learn to read, right? So why bother?
